A Feminine Approach to Mercury Retrograde (+ Everything Else)

Our wise ancestors understand that the movement and play in the Sky Nation have a phenomenal impact on the movement and flow of energy and emotion here on Earth. Even in Ayurveda we find this to be true. Though nowadays the first question I typically get asked regarding the Vedic Wisdom practices is, “What’s the best way to find out my dosha?” it’s actually far more important that we learn how to dance in harmony with the greater rhythms of our own Pachamama and the Heavenlies above.  If you look at the origins of Ayurveda you will find this to be true: if you went to an Ayurvedic physician in ancient times, they would look at your astral birth chart as opposed to typology. And so I pay my respects in the traditions of my lineage, my ancestors and mostly in regard for the deep relationship I have with the Earth and the Sky People. Even if you don’t care a whit about astrology, the suggestions I offer here are applicable in any sort of circumstance that might find you holding your breath, digging in claws or walking around with a worried frown etched into your luminous face. Mercury Retrograde is one of those things that can freak people right out. As with almost anything that beckons us into the slower, more mysterious and feminine aspects of our being, we want to run for the hills. The good news is, there is another way. Mercury Retrograde (headed our way Thursday, July 25) or any retrograde for that matter, is no call for panic. It is an opportunity to move inward, to restore and repair the inner systems of communication that serve to nurture our ability to communicate with others. Mercury is our perception, which is our subtle organ of cleansing and the best medicine during this time is to slow down, restore what has been degraded, dried up or overworked. It’s a time for deep recharge on all levels, to notice where we are living by rules that are not truly our own, and to revisit the places we have left things a mess, untended or unwhole. this is a time of permission-giving, completing old tasks and making amends. It is also a time to double check, every time you set out to write an email, make a phone call or utter a word to ensure you’re coming from the heart’s intention. Ways of Skillfully Weaving the Energy of Mercury Retrograde Forgiveness Ritual // The mercury retrograde comes just before the arrival of the Full Moon (Friday 7/27). The Full Moon is an auspicious time for consciously and lovingly ending emotional stories that we have grown beyond. Make a fire, outside or in a fire bowl. On small scraps of paper, write down everything you need to forgive, in yourself and in others. In this ritual, forgiveness isn’t a way to say what happened was acceptable. It’s an avenue of releasing irreconciled energy, freeing everyone from any blocks that may have developed. Clear a Layer // With emotions, our bodies, or the physical spaces we inhabit, there can be layers of accumulation. Take this opportunity to free up a layer, releasing what no longer feels relevant. For this release work to move beyond a simple (and perhaps less resilient) mental gesture, it is important that we acknowledge that the accumulations did serve a purpose. We release them with love and gratitude. This keeps us in impeccable energetic alignment, leaving us less susceptible to unconsciously filling our sacred space. Tend Unfinished Projects // If you notice procrastination has taken hold of some arena in your life, whether it is a difficult conversation, making a healing appointment or even getting your oil changed, tend to these areas. When you find circumstances that are easy to bring to resolution, go for it and get it done. In places of more resilient procrastination, look more deeply. Don’t try to power through. In many cases, the processes unfolding in our lives have their own lifelines. There can be bigger forces at work meaning that your original schedule was not the optimal one, in the grander scheme. The difference is whether we are checked out or whether we are leaning in. Lean in. Nurture Your Feminine // Get yourself outside so the nature spirits can cleanse your energy field. Adopt a slower pace. And especially when anxiety shows itself, set it free and submerge yourself in a gratitude practice you can feel down to your bones. Make gestures of love towards your body, buy yourself some flowers. And make sure you have plenty of hugs, holding hands and gestures of physical connection with those you love. Practice Giving + Receiving with Spirit // Keep close to the practices and ways that put you in intimate vicinity with the Infinite. Prayer, journaling, journey meditation and intuitive movement on your mat are all powerful ways to make sure you have open, healthy lines of communion with your creator. Cultivate Strength // True strength comes from knowing ‘what is mine’ and what belongs to others. Take an inventory of any difficult situations arising and nurture clarity on what really belongs to you and requires your energy and what does not.
